Douglas Gray first gained recognition working as an illustrator, before transitioning into fine art, shifting his focus to oil paintings that explore figurative scenes and urban atmospheres. His imagery frequently features figures poised in contemplative moments, captured within city interiors or framed through reflective surfaces-scenes that feel uncontrived, yet quietly compelling.
His technique layers detail-inside and out-giving depth to both environment and emotion. Windowpanes reflecting urban textures overlay interiors and figures, blending narrative and place in a single visual field.
In 2011, Gray was elected an Associate Member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists (RSMA). He quickly made his mark: winning the Winsor & Newton Award for Best Oil Painting and the Russell & Chapple Prize in 2012. In 2013, he became a full RSMA member, a recognition that aligns him with one of Britain's esteemed art societies. Gray's exhibition record spans both solo and group shows. He has exhibited extensively in London (including the Mall Galleries with RSMA), Harrogate, Paris, Amsterdam, and in the US-such as at the Waterhouse Gallery in Santa Barbara.
One of his high-profile commissions is Cloudbreak, River Thames, created for the River Room at The Savoy Hotel-an atmospheric, modern visual response to Monet's famous Thames depictions. The painting demonstrates Gray's ability to merge technical skill with place-based mood.
Collectors of Gray's work include the Savoy Hotel, Lord Hague, General Electric, Asda's George Davies, Universal Studios, Jackie Collins, NatWest Bank, Saatchi & Saatchi, and others-evidence that his work appeals across private and public domains.
