Dermot Smyth (b. 1978) is an Irish contemporary landscape artist based in Dublin. Having qualified as an architect in 2004 in Glasgow, he quickly discovered his love of oil painting through tutorials at the Mackintosh School of Art.
He initially focused on painting Glasgow's urban environment. However, on his return to Ireland he developed his long standing interest in painting the rural landscape.
Dermot's paintings are not landscapes in the traditional sense, but focus on buildings that are so common place that they have become invisible. He paints the landscape through these buildings, expressing their heroic nature, battling to maintain their core purpose of providing shelter against the ravages of time and the elements.
Dermot has exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, the Royal Scottish Academy Summer Exhibition, the Royal Hibernian Academy Annual Exhibition, the Royal Society of British Artists Annual Exhibition, and Visual Arts Scotland Centenary Exhibition. His paintings are held in private collections across the UK and Ireland.
