'Vernacular buildings are a ubiquitous presence within the rural landscape. Their forms and materials have imbedded themselves in our subconscious and form a key part of our experience of the countryside.'
Whilst Dermot's paintings could be described as landscapes, they are composed as portraits, with the building front and centre. This imbues a sense of identity. The surrounding landscape is not a faithful depiction, but created to provide a strong emotional narrative for the viewer.
Instinctive mark making brings tension and energy to the work, while the use of a subdued palette enhances the solemnity and quiet energy of the subject.
