Peter Kuhfeld is a highly respected British painter whose work spans portraiture, landscape, architecture and atmospheric interiors. Trained at the Leicester School of Art and later at the Royal Academy Schools, Kuhfeld developed a rigorous command of drawing and composition that underpins the clarity, richness and grace of his mature style. During his time at the Royal Academy Schools he was awarded the Silver Medal for Drawing, the Sir David Murray Landscape Prize, the Sir Edwin Landseer Prize, and the Dooley Prize for Anatomical Drawing - early recognition of the technical skill that continues to define his work.
While widely known for his royal commissions, Kuhfeld has also created major series of landscape and architectural paintings, including extended projects in Venice and Rome. His paintings of the Forum, palaces, and historic interiors reveal a sensitivity to light, geometry and atmosphere that places him firmly within the tradition of British observational painting. In addition to his celebrated portraits, his landscapes and interiors are admired for their luminosity, elegant structuring and a quiet, timeless sense of drama.
Kuhfeld's long association with the Royal Household has contributed to his reputation as one of Britain's most distinguished contemporary figurative painters. He accompanied Their Royal Highnesses The Prince and Princess of Wales on tours across Africa, Japan, Europe and the Middle East, and later travelled with Their Majesties The King and Queen.
Among his many royal commissions are portraits of Prince William and Prince Harry as young children, major ceremonial works such as The Marriage of Prince William and Catherine Middleton (2011), paintings commemorating state occasions including The Queen's Diamond Jubilee River Pageant, and most recently the Coronation State Portrait of His Majesty King Charles III (2024-25), with works installed in both the National Gallery and Buckingham Palace.
Kuhfeld's work has been exhibited at leading galleries, including the New Grafton Gallery, The Fine Art Society, W.H. Patterson, Mall Galleries and other prominent venues, and his paintings are held in significant public and private collections.
