Original Artists' Posters
Original lithographic poster in six colours. Printed by Atelier Mourlot and bears the Mourlot watermark in the paper. Printed in an unnumbered edition of 750.
This poster was created for the 1958 Oeuvre Graphique exhibition in Geneva, devoted to Braque’s prints. Unlike posters that simply reproduce paintings, this image was designed by Braque specifically for the poster, showing how seriously he treated printmaking as a creative medium in its own right.
The composition features a bird in flight, a recurring motif in Braque’s later work. Here it is reduced to abstracted planes and shapes, emphasising movement, balance, and spatial harmony. It reflects the same concerns with structure and rhythm that guided his Cubist explorations, translating them into a clear, graphic language.
Printed as a six-colour lithograph, the poster demonstrates the technical ambition of mid‑20th-century printmaking, with each colour requiring a separate stone or plate and careful registration to align precisely. The multiple colour layers allowed Braque’s carefully balanced planes and nuanced tonalities to translate faithfully onto paper, preserving the complexity of his studio practice while making it accessible to collectors and the public.
Printed in an unnumbered edition of around 750, it is a rare example of Braque creating a poster as an original graphic work rather than a simple advertisement.
