Original Artists' Posters
Lithographic poster printed by Atelier Mourlot, Paris.
This poster was produced for Braque’s exhibition L’atelier de Braque at the Musée du Louvre (Dec 1961–Feb 1962), a rare moment when a major museum like the Louvre devoted a solo show to a living modern painter. The exhibition highlighted Braque’s role as co-founder of Cubism and his range, from early Cubist experiments to later studio compositions, reaffirming his central role in modern art.
The poster depicts a bird motif, a recurring element in Braque’s later work, abstracted into overlapping planes and simplified shapes that suggest both motion and stillness. These birds are visual ideas about freedom, structure, and pictorial thought rather than literal imagery. The muted palette and careful arrangement echo the dynamics of his studio practice, where objects and motifs were repeatedly reconfigured to explore space and surface tension.
Though unsigned and printed in a broad edition, it remains a compelling document of an exhibition that placed one of modern art’s foundational figures at the heart of one of its most iconic institutions.
