Original Artists' Posters
Framed size: 79 x 53cm
Original signed in plate lithographic poster for the Septieme Biennale de Peinture, Menton in 1968. Printed by charles Sorlier and published by Mourlet. Featuring Chagall’s 1954 Blue Bird painting.
Produced for the 7th Biennale de Peinture de Menton in 1968, this original lithographic poster reflects the Biennale’s role as a major post-war platform for international modern painting on the French Riviera. Menton deliberately positioned itself as a cultural centre capable of attracting artists of Chagall’s stature, reinforcing the region’s ongoing significance beyond Paris.
The image features a 1954 gouache work by Chagall, L’Oiseau Bleu. A luminous blue bird floats above a dreamlike townscape, accompanied by symbolic figures suspended between earth and sky. The motif recurs throughout Chagall’s work as an emblem of freedom, imagination, and spiritual transcendence, while the compressed, floating space reflects his fusion of memory, folklore, and modernist form. Signed in plate, the poster functions both as a document of a significant cultural event and as a distilled expression of Chagall’s mature visual language — poetic, symbolic, and immediately recognisable.
