Original Artists' Posters
Lithographic poster produced for the 1972 Munich Olympics. Signed and dated in the plate.
This poster was commissioned for the 1972 Munich Olympic Games Edition Olympia series, a culturally ambitious project pairing international sport with leading contemporary artists. Spanish/Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida was among the contributors, bringing his sculptural vocabulary of bold, interlocking black forms to a graphic medium that emphasises contrast, balance, and spatial tension.
Unlike figurative depictions of athletes, Chillida’s design uses stark shapes to suggest rhythm, resistance, and poised movement, where positive and negative space engage like opposing forces in dynamic equilibrium. Its abstract simplicity captures the essence of disciplined effort without illustrating a specific sport, offering a powerful visual metaphor for athletic precision and inner focus.
