Lithographic poster: 1972 Munich Olympics, signed and dated in plate.
Produced for the 1972 Munich Olympic Games, this poster was part of the Edition Olympia series, which invited contemporary artists to bring distinct visions to the international celebration of sport.
German artist Paul Wunderlich (1927–2010) was renowned for his surreal, biomorphic figuration, blending precise draftsmanship with dreamlike distortion. His Olympic image abstracts a male torso into a sculptural form set against a deep field, evoking both anatomical study and mythic presence, and positioning the human body as a timeless emblem of proportion, movement, and aspiration.
Wunderlich’s graphic language—stretching, elongating, and morphing human forms—derives from decades of work in lithography and etching, where he explored erotic mythologies, ornamental line, and psychological depth. In this poster, the torso becomes a visual metaphor for athletic presence, bridging sport’s physicality with poetic, sculptural form.
