Lithographic poster: 1972 Munich Olympics, signed and dated in plate.

Produced for the 1972 Munich Olympic Games, this poster exemplifies Wesselmann’s distinctive Pop sensibility and mastery of graphic reduction. The image isolates a single foot in motion, rendered in flat, saturated planes of colour, distilling the human form to its essential shapes while retaining a sense of weight, rhythm, and athletic presence.

Unlike other posters in the series, Wesselmann focuses on a fragment rather than a full figure, transforming it into an iconic study of structure and motion.

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and based in New York, Wesselmann became a leading figure in American Pop Art, celebrated for his bold treatment of the human body and everyday objects. His work bridges commercial design and fine art, most famously in his Great American Nude series, where abstraction, colour, and graphic clarity turn the body into an emblematic, almost sculptural form.

The signed lithograph preserves the precision and intensity of his original design and within the Munich Olympic poster series, this work stands out for its daring economy, offering a uniquely Pop interpretation of athleticism and motion.
