David Tress:

tHE LAST WORKS AVAILABLE FROM JOHN DAVIES gALLERY

David Tress has been one of Britain's most significant landscape painters over the last 45 years, as well as being one of Wales's best known artists. His roots lie in the great tradition of English watercolour painting, in which heightened appreciation of atmospheric perspective, underpinned with authoritative draftsmanship, a naturalistic palette and gifted mark-making are indispensible attributes for a top artist. David has all these gifts but further has moved the genre of landscape painting on with a unique style of working on heavy gauge watercolour paper but with mixed media, including pastel and acrylic. His approach has been very physical, almost akin to New York style action painting.

Tress has been exhibiting strongly since the 1980s and has been the sole feature of three major British Travelling Exhibitions (Wales in 1977, Wales and the Midlands and Guildhall Art Gallery in London from 2003-2005, and then a major tour between 2008 - 2011 starting at MOMA in Wales and touring through Keswick Museum and Art Gallery, Worcester Art Gallery, and the Maclaurin Galleries, Ayr). His work features in many Public Collections, including the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Wales, the Guildhall Art Gallery, London and the Pallant House Gallery, Chichester, to name a few. In 2014, David Tress was commissioned by our present King (when he was Prince of Wales) to paint a picture of LLwynywremod, his country house in Wales.

John Davies Gallery has held solo exhibitions of David Tress's work about every two years for the past fifteen years. And it is with sadness, but complete understanding, that we confirm that from the 31st July 2025 all of David's paintings will be transferred to, and handled solely by, his West End London Gallery, Messums. One can only speculate on the future of prices for David's paintings, but we feel there is a strong likelihood that they are set to rise significantly in the coming years as his considerable reputation, credentials, talent and the quality of his past exhibitions, collections (public and private) and publications foundation the next stage.

Below are the last examples of David Tress's work that we will hold in the gallery. These paintings are available for viewing (subject to prior notice) through to July 31st 2025. Please contact the gallery if you are interested in viewing or purchasing any David Tress paintings prior to July 31st. (Should you choose, the Government-run Own Art Scheme is available and involves payment of a deposit of your choosing at the time of purchase, plus 10 x interest-free monthly payments of the balance.)

Note: Many of the images below include a grey/blue background which David photographs his works against. This is not part of the work or framing. Contact the gallery if you would like photographs of framed works or more detail.)
