'I still return to the same places time and again. It's the changing light, weather and tides that keep them endlessly interesting, and every painting teaches me to look a little differently.'
Jo Rizzato paints the landscape she knows best. Living in Manningtree, she spends much of her time walking beside the River Stour, returning to the same stretches of river throughout the year as the tides, weather and seasons quietly transform them.
Working in acrylic on canvas, she uses photographs as a starting point before allowing the painting to develop more freely in the studio. Rather than describing every detail of a place, her paintings are concerned with its changing light, colour and atmosphere. The result is a body of work that reflects a lasting familiarity with the rivers and coastline of East Anglia.
